The station is also a small underground art experience, with colourful designs and Portuguese cultural references around its platforms and corridors.

The station opened in 1959 and was one of the first stations of the Lisbon Metro. Over the years, its artistic decoration has helped give it a strong identity. The work reflects Portugal’s history, discoveries and relationship with the sea, themes that are often found in Lisbon’s public art.

One of the most interesting features is the use of azulejos, the traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles. The station includes panels created by artist Maria Keil, one of the most important figures in the history of Lisbon Metro art. Her work helped establish the idea that Metro stations could be cultural spaces as well as transport facilities.
