The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued warnings for Faro, Beja, Évora, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Lisbon and Setúbal.

The yellow warnings are in place until 9pm today, 7 September, due to high maximum temperatures.

In Faro, IPMA points specifically to the persistence of high maximum temperatures, while the remaining mainland districts are under warning for high maximum temperatures.

The hot weather is also extending to Madeira.

The south coast of Madeira and Porto Santo are under a yellow warning from today until 6pm on Tuesday, 8 September, due to the persistence of high maximum temperatures.

A yellow warning is issued by IPMA when there is a risk associated with certain weather conditions, although it is below the more serious orange and red warning levels.

The latest warnings continue a particularly hot start to September in Portugal, following several days of temperatures well above what would normally be expected at this time of year.

People spending extended periods outdoors are advised to take additional care during the hottest part of the day, particularly children, older people and others who may be more vulnerable to high temperatures.
