No executions have taken place since 2004, although death sentences remain possible. The legislation now requires President Joseph Aoun’s signature, with his government having expressed support for its passage.

According to local NGO Together Against the Death Penalty, 84 people are currently on death row. Raphaël Chenuil-Hazan, director of ECPM, described the parliamentary vote as a “historic breakthrough”. He said the decision brings hope and could pave the way towards a fairer and safer society, as Lebanon moves closer to formally ending a punishment it has not carried out since 2004.
