He was a skilled metalsmith and an advisor and counsellor to King Dagobert.

He became a priest and then a Bishop and was known for freeing numerous slaves and building churches and monasteries.

He preached in Antwerp, Ghent, Landers and Courtal.

Eligius died in Noyon on 1 December 659.

He is the Patron saint of Metalworkers, goldsmiths, coin collectors and veterinarians.
