The tool turns scientific projections into an accessible map and could help communities prepare for future glacier loss. In Switzerland, the Bella Tola Glacier disappeared this August, closely matching researchers’ projection that it would vanish between 2026 and 2029.

The Global Glacier Extinction Explorer lets users search for glaciers and compare their projected survival under different warming scenarios.
At 1.5°C of warming, nearly half of today’s glaciers could remain by 2100, compared with around 20 percent at 2.7°C. In the European Alps, around 110 glaciers could remain under 2.7°C warming, falling to about 20 under 4°C.
