The warnings have been issued due to the “persistence of high maximum temperatures”, with much of the country expected to see temperatures rise above 30°C.

Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Lisbon, Castelo Branco and Portalegre will remain under a yellow warning until 6 pm on Wednesday.

Warnings for Porto, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga are due to remain in force until 6 pm on Tuesday. In Setúbal, the warning currently runs until 7 pm on Monday.

The IPMA said temperatures began rising gradually on Saturday as warm, dry continental air moved across the Iberian Peninsula. The conditions are being driven by an anticyclone positioned north of the Azores and extending towards the Bay of Biscay.

A yellow warning is the least serious of the IPMA’s three warning levels but indicates that the weather could present a risk for certain outdoor activities.

The prolonged heat has also increased the danger of rural fires in several parts of the country.

An official heatwave is recorded when the daily maximum temperature remains at least 5°C above the average for six consecutive days.
