After several days of rain, thunderstorms and unusually cool conditions for the time of year, the weather is set to become drier and warmer across much of the country.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts a rise in maximum temperatures on Friday, although parts of northern and central Portugal may still begin the day with cloudy skies.

The cloud is expected to clear gradually, leaving longer sunny periods, particularly in southern Portugal. Some cloud may remain along the coast and in northern areas.

The improvement will continue into the weekend, with maximum temperatures reaching around 30°C in parts of the south.

Faro, Beja and Évora are all expected to reach close to 30°C, while minimum temperatures will range from approximately 19°C in Faro to 15°C in Portalegre.

In Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, temperatures are forecast to reach 28°C in Santarém and around 26°C in Lisbon. Minimum temperatures will remain between 15°C and 17°C.

Conditions will remain slightly cooler in northern and central Portugal. Castelo Branco could reach 28°C, while the maximum in Viana do Castelo is expected to remain closer to 22°C.

Nights will also be cooler in the north, with temperatures potentially falling to around 9°C in Bragança. Aveiro is expected to record a minimum of approximately 16°C.

The last weekend of August is expected to be drier and warmer, although temperatures will remain below the extreme levels recorded earlier this month.
