Its design and artwork bring colour and local character to an everyday public space in the municipality of Amadora.

The station opened in 2004 and was designed by architect Leopoldo de Almeida Rosa. Like many other stations around Lisbon’s Metro network, Alfornelos uses art to make the space look more than a simple station underground. The station is part of a wider tradition in Lisbon, where public transport spaces are used to introduce passengers to architecture and visual art.

Inside, passengers can find artistic details integrated into the station’s architecture. The use of colour, tiles and geometric forms creates a modern atmosphere, while the large spaces allow the artwork to become part of the daily experience.
