Nobu, the brand founded by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro and film producer Meir Teper, is planning a major development at Monte Rei, the 1,000-acre golfing and country club near Vila Nova de Cacela.
The scheme is due to break ground in 2027 and open in 2029. It will bring around 21,000 square metres of Nobu villas and branded residences to the resort, alongside a 100-room hotel and a signature Nobu restaurant.
Monte Rei already draws ultra high net worth buyers from around the world, largely on the strength of its Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, rated Portugal's best. Property market watchers see Nobu's arrival as a signal of something bigger: the country's growing standing among luxury developers over the longer term.
Nobu currently operates 50 restaurants and 19 hotels worldwide, including sites across Europe in the UK, Spain, Italy, Monaco, Poland, Hungary and Turkey. The Monte Rei project builds on the brand's existing confidence in Portugal, following 2023 plans for a Nobu hotel and restaurant on Lisbon's Avenida da Liberdade.
Paul Stannard, Chairman and Founder of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club, commented: “Development of branded residences is particularly significant for property investors as they give residential schemes an instantly recognisable identity – buyers are not simply being offered a home but access to a lifestyle proposition built around hospitality, service and leisure.
“This model is increasingly prominent in international luxury property markets and expansion in Portugal by Nobu suggests the country is becoming part of that global ecosystem.”
Stannard pointed out that the Western Algarve has historically led the region's luxury property market, home to established names such as Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo that have long attracted wealthy international buyers.
Monte Rei sits in a different part of the region altogether, the quieter Eastern Algarve close to the Spanish border, set among countryside rather than coastline. It is already a high-end destination in its own right, and Nobu's arrival looks likely to raise its international profile further still.
“It could be crucial to Portugal's luxury property sector,” Stannard added. “As established locations become increasingly mature, less-developed areas with space, privacy and high-quality infrastructure can offer a new proposition for both developers and buyers.

“The wider significance of the Nobu announcement is how Portugal is now attracting luxury brands that have traditionally concentrated on Europe's established premium destinations.
“For international property buyers, that strengthens the country's proposition: climate, lifestyle and relatively easy access to the rest of Europe, plus good international air links.
“Shrewd investors will surely see the Nobu project as another indicator of Portugal's luxury property market trajectory.”
