The information was received at around 07:20, “when the aircraft scheduled to operate that flight was still approaching Lisbon Airport”, coming from another flight, the Public Security Police (PSP) added in a statement.

The PSP activated airport security procedures and is still trying to establish “the origin and circumstances of the threat”, with no further information released at this stage, as it could compromise the investigation.

At 07:20, police received a communication “concerning a bomb threat directed at flight FR8197, operated by Ryanair, departing from Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon and bound for Rome, Italy”.

The aircraft scheduled to operate the flight was still completing another journey and was about to land at Lisbon Airport, the PSP National Directorate explained in a statement.

“Given the nature of the threat and the information available”, police activated airport security procedures. “Following the aircraft's landing in Lisbon, a security inspection was carried out by officers from the Special Police Unit (UEP), with the aim of checking for any objects or devices that could compromise the safety of the aircraft and its occupants”.

In addition, all passengers and their luggage had to undergo security screening procedures again before boarding, the PSP National Directorate added.

“The competent authorities are carrying out investigative procedures to establish the origin and circumstances of the threat. At this stage, no additional information that could compromise the investigation is being disclosed”, it stated.

Consecutive cases

This is not the first time that a bomb threat has happened in Europe, which is already a concerning situation for the authorities on the continent.

On 3 November, a Ryanair plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Rome following a bomb threat; the flight also departed from Lisbon.

On the same day, another aircraft arriving at the same airport in Rome, this time from Dublin, reportedly landed under similar circumstances following a bomb threat on board. The aircraft was escorted by the Italian Air Force before landing, but once again, no dangerous items were found.
