One of the most important landmarks of the region’s heritage, Paderne Castle was built in the 12th century during the Almohad period and was later conquered in 1240 by D. Paio Peres Correia. It remained a key part of Portugal’s defensive system until its deactivation in 1858. The site was also home to part of the local population until the 16th century, when the settlement moved outside its walls.

Although its ruins reflect centuries without inhabitants and the impact of the 1755 earthquake, restoration works in recent years have helped preserve its surviving structures.

Albufeira’s mayor, José Carlos Rolo, highlighted the importance of the initiative in promoting local heritage and sharing the municipality’s history, noting the success of previous editions.
