I am shamelessly writing to attract new members for Just Sing, a community choir in Guia, who can cater for all voice ranges and abilities - from the deepest of the deep to the highest of the high - male or female. They will welcome anyone who enjoys singing, and are blessed to have the talented and experienced maestro, Antonio de Jesus, who will coax the best out of everyone.

The benefits of singing are well known - stress relief, improved mood, increased lung capacity, and stronger social connections. It can boost your immune system, enhance memory, and build confidence, all the while providing a sense of relaxation and emotional release. You may have got serious stuff going on in your private life, and coming together once a week for two hours will give you some “me time” to get away from the norm and raise your spirits.

If you are curious, come along to Guia Community Hall, opposite the Market building in Guia, on Wednesdays at 18.00-20.00hrs, just to listen if you aren’t brave enough to join in. They have just started putting a Christmas programme together, so some songs will be familiar and maybe some won’t, but will soon be picked up under our maestro Antonio’s guidance. Some performance dates are already on the calendar, but they would be happy to hear from new singers and anyone who would like an enthusiastic festive singing performance for their Xmas event.

You will be made more than welcome, and any one of them will answer questions. Many don’t even read music, but don’t let that put you off! Lyrics are provided and practice is sometimes accompanied with much laughter and good humour.

Choirs are alive and kicking in Portugal, with over 20 listed, and they aren’t all attached to churches - some indeed have singing preferences and different languages, so there is a choir for every singer.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I would bet my last cent that they all get enjoyment from their singing, whether it be formal or fun. Ask around - there’s bound to be one nearby that’s just right you, but let “Just Sing” be your first choice!
