The system converts data into symbols called voxels and uses a laser to encode them into the glass. Researchers said 4.84 terabytes can be stored in a 12 square centimetre piece of glass, roughly equivalent to two million printed books. Current storage methods have limited shelf lives.


Digital heritage specialists have welcomed the research, although some experts cautioned that large-scale use would require significant investment to secure sufficient silica glass.
