According to EUIPO data, released in a statement, counterfeiting in Portugal causes annual losses of €337 million in the clothing sector and €83 million in the handbag, jewellery, and watch sectors.
Globally, in the European Union (EU), the fashion and clothing sector "suffers estimated annual losses of €12 billion, while counterfeit handbags, jewellery, and watches cost genuine manufacturers around €2.7 billion in lost sales every year in the EU."
According to the results of the EU-wide survey, half of EU consumers value good design and around three in four (73%) "are willing to pay more for a product with a more refined design".
Still, "driven by the expansion of e-commerce and the influence of social media", more counterfeit products have emerged, and around 13% of Europeans say they have intentionally bought this type of product, "a figure that rises to 26% among younger consumers, aged 15 to 24".
