Solar supplied a record 12.8 percent of electricity, compared with 12.2 percent from coal. Solar generation rose 17 percent year-on-year, while coal output fell 11 percent. Ember reports that coal’s share of the electricity mix has nearly halved over the past five years.

Solar generation reached an all-time high of 45.5 TWh, making it the third-largest source of electricity behind gas and nuclear. The milestone follows renewables surpassing gas generation in March 2026.
