Speaking out on Wednesday, 4 November, Vance said the conflict was the main reason Republicans had lost support, arguing that voters who backed Trump in the 2024 presidential election had turned against the party.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote in a lengthy post on social media platform X.

His comments followed a major electoral setback for Republicans, with Democrats winning control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, significantly changing the political balance in Washington for the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency.

Vance said the administration had entered election day with expectations of strong Republican turnout, but that many voters who previously supported Trump had instead backed Democratic candidates.

He also referred to warnings received before the election that the party needed to address four issues to retain its majority: ending the Iran war, tackling inflation and the cost of living, prioritising American interests and reconsidering the country’s relationship with Israel.

The vice president argued that Republicans needed to acknowledge the reasons behind their defeat rather than blame the outcome on individual candidates or campaign strategies.

Trump acknowledges impact of war

Trump also acknowledged that the conflict had contributed to the Republican losses, although he defended his decision to launch military operations against Iran alongside Israel earlier this year.

“I think a part of it was Iran,” Trump told Fox News following Tuesday’s vote.

In a separate interview with The Wall Street Journal, the president said he did not regret the military campaign.

“I did the right thing. I would have done it again,” he said.

The war, which began in February, has continued for more than eight months, disrupting international energy markets and contributing to higher fuel costs.

Rising petrol prices, inflation and household expenses became major issues during the election campaign, with Democratic candidates repeatedly linking the cost of living to the administration’s economic and foreign policies.

Economic concerns influence voters

Vance’s assessment comes as Republicans begin examining the reasons behind their losses, with voter dissatisfaction extending beyond the conflict itself.

Associated Press voter research identified concerns about living costs and greater congressional oversight of the Trump administration being among the factors influencing the election.

The results represent a major change for Trump’s presidency. Democratic control of Congress will give the opposition greater power to scrutinise the administration, pursue investigations and challenge legislative priorities.

However, Trump will retain the presidential veto, potentially complicating efforts by Democrats to pass legislation without Republican support.

Vance, who is considered a possible contender for the 2028 presidential election, said Republicans would need to address voter dissatisfaction if they hope to regain support.

His intervention also highlights differences within the administration over how to interpret the political consequences of the Iran conflict, even as Trump continues to defend the military campaign.
