The company has continued monitoring and improving water management since the mine closed in 1995. Its reclamation system uses a flooded pit lake to manage contaminants, strengthening environmental protection while improving resilience to weather and power outages.
The former Island Copper Mine operated from 1971 to 1995 and once employed 900 local residents.
Following its closure, BHP developed a reclamation programme using seawater to create a stratified pit lake. Continued monitoring and adaptations have improved water management, reduced worker safety risks and increased the system’s long-term reliability, earning recognition from British Columbia’s reclamation committee.
