Minister announces surprise police road checks for holiday weekend

Luís Neves says motorists should expect inspections without warning as authorities reinforce patrols across the country.

The Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, announced today that security forces will be reinforcing road patrols next weekend, stressing that the focus will be on unpredictability, meaning that police officers will not be marked.

"Next weekend (...) many operations will take place, focusing on unpredictability and the fact that those working on the ground are not properly marked," Neves said at a press conference on road accidents in Lisbon, justifying the measure by the fact that it is a "holiday transition" period, during which more accidents have occurred.

According to the minister, the operations "will take place throughout the country," with particular emphasis on the "critical points" identified by the authorities.

"People need to get used to the fact that rules are to be followed and that there could be an inspection at any time," Neves underscores.

Conducting stop-and-search operations without any prior notice was one of the measures announced in April by Luís Neves as an effort to reduce road accidents.

It's not stop and search. The police does not have the authority to search your vehicle without probable cause. Your reporter should have noted this.

You know what would really be nice.
A stop and "DO YOUR JOB".
We have these rules of proper behavior in the Algarve and they go unenforced.
GNR and local law enforcement do absolutely nothing.
There are people chanting their football teams support at 3 a.m.
There is public urination and people are walking around wearing next to nothing.
If someone is urination on the shoes of a GNR patroleman or woman, they would do nothing if they were on their phone.
Surprise road checks...wow!
They will do these in the morning or early afternoon before people get drunk.
The people of the Algarve do not need a law enforcement that does half measures.
The cities half been collecting a tourist tax now for a few years.
Do you see a diffeerence?
Better garbage pick-up?
More law enforcementt?
Where is this tax money going?
It is not bem=nefitting the residents.
