The transport operator has invested more than €50 million in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure across Portugal as it steps up efforts to reduce emissions from its transport operations.

This investment has enabled the group to expand its electrified fleet to 283 vehicles, taking the proportion of electric vehicles to more than 7 percent of its total fleet, working towards a target of 10 percent.

As reported by the Barraqueiro Group, the programme also includes installing 88 charging points nationwide, providing the infrastructure needed to support further expansion of its electric fleet.

The group estimates that the new vehicles and charging facilities will help prevent around 8,119 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, contributing to the decarbonisation of road passenger transport in Portugal.

Operational sustainability

Pedro Costa, the group’s director of external communications and institutional relations, said the investment reflects Barraqueiro’s commitment to improving services while combining business growth with operational modernisation and environmental responsibility.

He also highlighted the importance of maintaining territorial cohesion, with the group aiming to contribute to a cleaner transport system across the country.

The company sees the transition to electric mobility as part of a broader strategy to reduce the transport sector’s carbon footprint while preparing its operations for future demands.

Diverse portfolio

Founded in 1915, the Barraqueiro Group operates across Portugal, Brazil and Spain, with a diverse portfolio of transport businesses.

It employs around 10,000 people and manages a fleet of more than 5,000 vehicles, including road, rail, tram and river transport services for both passengers and freight.

The group travels more than 290 million kilometres annually and carries over 325 million passengers, making its investment in electrification a significant contribution to efforts to reduce emissions across its operations.

As its electric fleet continues to grow, Barraqueiro is moving toward its 10 percent target while expanding the charging network needed to support the transition.
