The most recent data from the Blue Flag Program of the Foundation for Environmental Education reveals that around 64% of Portugal's beaches received the Blue Flag distinction in 2026, which corresponds to 438 beaches, including river beaches.

The Blue Flag

The Blue Flag is an award given to beaches that meet a set of criteria related to water quality, environmental management, safety, accessibility and environmental education. In other words, the program will not only assess water quality, but also the overall conditions for bathers, which also includes how these areas are managed by the competent authorities

Portugal Position

The results demonstrate that Portugal occupies a prominent position in the European context.

In addition to leading in the proportion of beaches in the territory, the country also has comprehensive coverage of award-winning beaches across its regions.

Blue Flag beaches are distributed throughout the continental coast, as well as in the Autonomous Regions and in several river beaches located inland. Thus, the quality of Portuguese beaches goes beyond the most recognised tourist spots.

Other countries

At the top of the ranking in Europe, Ireland appears in second place, and Cyprus in third, with 50% and 47% of beaches, respectively, recognised with the Blue Flag. Among other popular beach destinations in Europe, Greece has 38% of its beaches with the Blue Flag, Spain 35%, France 14%, Croatia 12% and Italy 11%.

The values ​​presented show the percentage of beaches awarded, taking into account the number of beaches in the country. The percentages shown do not refer to the number of flags awarded, because in countries with extensive coastlines, several beaches may be distinguished in absolute terms but represent a smaller proportion.
