Public transport has a special social role in the Azores, where many people live in smaller communities. For some residents, especially older people, the bus is an important way to travel to school, work, shops and health services. For tourists, it can also offer a more local and affordable way to discover the islands.

Each island has its own bus network and timetables. On larger islands, such as São Miguel and Terceira, buses connect main towns with villages and popular areas.

However, services can be less frequent outside the main urban centres, and some routes may have limited schedules at weekends or on public holidays.
