The insurance sticker stopped being obligatory in July 2023 as a result of Law No. 32/2023, and in its place it is now possible to present either a digital wallet or an electronic proof provided by the insurance companies— an option which has recently been included in the general terms and conditions by the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority.

Likewise, the requirement to display the periodic inspection vignette and proof of IUC payment has also been abolished—this obligation having been cancelled in the Azores in 2025 by Regional Legislative Decree No.

13/2025/A. Yet the duty to keep the vehicle inspection current and to have the relevant proof remains, and those who fail to carry out the mandatory inspection may be fined up to €1,250.

Even though a general waiver of these stickers has been granted, there are certain cases in which it is still necessary to put stickers on the windscreen. This applies to vehicles fitted with LPG or natural gas systems as specified in Ordinance No. 196-B/2015; to vehicles owned by organisations that are legally exempt from the requirement to have insurance—these vehicles having to show proof of their exemption as provided for in Decree-Law No. 291/2007; and to resident parking permits which are not based exclusively on digital systems.

Nevertheless, the fact that the obligation to display a physical sticker on the windscreen is removed does not release drivers from their legal duties; they must still produce the required documents—such as their driver’s licence, the vehicle registration document and the insurance certificate—in physical form or through the gov.pt app when undergoing inspections.
