Organised by Green Trekker, the 21-kilometre hike through the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros includes a visit to the Cruto das Cavalarias, a 614-metre-high spot locally associated with witches and stories of magic.

As reported by the organisers, the area has long been surrounded by local tales passed down through generations, with the Cruto das Cavalarias being called the “Mountain of the Witches” by many.

Route trail

This seven-hour route will take place on 25 October at 10 am from the car park of the Associação Recreativa, Cultural e Desportiva da Mendiga. From there, participants make their way through an area of oaks and olive trees towards the north-western slopes of the Serra dos Candeeiros.

The trail then continues toward the Vale da Lapa before reaching the Portela do Vale de Espinho, followed by Cruto das Cavalarias, with a line of traditional windmills along the climb.

According to Green Trekker, reaching the summit offers wide views across the surrounding landscape and the chance to discover an area they describe as having a particularly striking natural setting.

Limestone landscapes

The Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros covers more than 38,000 hectares and is known for its limestone landscapes, caves and traditional villages, as well as the legends connected to its mountains and valleys.

Green Trekker recommends that participants should be prepared for a demanding day outdoors and bring at least 1.5 litres of water, a hat, suitable clothing, trekking shoes and a packed lunch.
