The median advertised rent for a room was €505 a month in the second quarter of 2026. For a studio, it rose to €908. A one-bedroom flat, known as a T1 in Portugal, cost €1,128 a month, based on long-term rental listings analysed by idealista.

Portugal’s minimum wage is €920 a month in 2026. That puts the median advertised T1 rent €208 above a full month’s gross minimum wage, before considering food, transport or household bills. A studio comes in just €12 below it.

For people looking in the Algarve, the figures are higher still. A T1 in Faro district was advertised for a median of €1,171 a month. In Faro city, the median was €1,001. That city figure is lower because the district includes other rental markets beyond Faro itself.

Lisbon was the most expensive district for a T1, at €1,354 a month, followed by Madeira at €1,295. At the cheaper end were Guarda (€456), Castelo Branco (€527) and Bragança (€529). The gap between locations is large, but moving to a cheaper district is not necessarily an option for someone whose work or family is elsewhere.

Sharing a home brings the cost down, though it does not make every city cheap. Rooms in Lisbon and Funchal were advertised for a median of €570 a month. In Guarda city, that figure was €200.

The analysis looked at listings posted on idealista between April and June 2026. These are prices landlords asked for, not necessarily what tenants ended up paying.
