The Portuguese city Estarreja has won the title of European Green Leaf 2028, “an award given by the European Commission that recognises the commitment of cities to environmental sustainability and quality of life,” announced the local council.
The Estarreja candidacy was selected for the final held on Thursday in the city of Guimarães, competing with the Spanish cities of Benidorm and Chiclana de la Frontera, Notícias de Aveiro reports.
Green transformation
The European Commission awards the European Green Leaf 2028 to smaller cities “that stand out for their environmental performance and commitment to a greener and more sustainable transition.”
According to the mayor of Estarreja, Isabel Simões Pinto, “It is an achievement for all those who believed and continue to believe that it is possible to reconcile economic development, environmental sustainability and quality of life.”
Estarreja was recognised as a “compelling example” of green transformation, successfully moving beyond its industrial legacy, and received 200,000 euros for green projects and public activities.
