Hints of a possible return to Portugal began to emerge on Monday, when a billboard on the Segunda Circular, next to the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, appeared with an image recognised by U2 fans: MacPhisto’s hat, associated with vocalist Bono Vox, on a red curtain, SIC Notícias reports.

The billboard featured the date ‘29 October’, and similar advertising panels have appeared in cities such as Amsterdam, Milan, and Stockholm, also displaying the date, according to Expresso.

Possible concert at Estádio da Luz

The placement of the advertisement has prompted speculation that a possible concert could be held at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. However, the billboard does not indicate a date for any concert.

The band is expected to announce the dates and venues for the European leg of the tour this week, which is anticipated to include at least one concert in Portugal.

U2’s upcoming world tour

The tour will be called ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, the title of one of the singles the band has already released. The other two songs presented so far are ‘Silence’ and ‘Street of Dreams’.

The tour will begin on 23 February 2027 in Mexico City, with the Irish band already confirming nine dates for their world tour under the Live Nation label: four in Mexico City (Mexico), three in São Paulo (Brazil) and two in Buenos Aires (Argentina). During the tour launch, U2 promised to reveal the European and North American concert dates in the following weeks.

U2’s previous concerts in Portugal

U2 performed their first concert in Portugal in 1982 and have since then returned to the country for seven more concerts, with the latest taking place in 2018 during the band’s “eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE” tour, NiT reports.

According to the concert archive U2Tours.com, these are the previous concert dates and venues in Portugal. U2 first performed in Portugal on 3 August 1982 at Vilar de Mouros, as part of their October Tour. The band returned to Lisbon on 15 May 1993 for a concert at Estádio José Alvalade during the Zoo TV Tour, followed by another performance at the same venue on 11 September 1997 as part of the PopMart Tour. On 14 August 2005, U2 performed at Estádio José Alvalade again during their Vertigo Tour.

The band subsequently played two concerts at the City of Coimbra Stadium on 2 and 3 October 2010 as part of the U2 360° Tour. Their most recent performances in Portugal took place on 16 and 17 September 2018 at Lisbon’s Altice Arena, during the Experience + Innocence Tour.
