The Irish band announced the album on 24 September, exactly 50 years after its members first came together in Dublin. It will be released on 13 November and will be U2’s first album of new material in nine years.

The title, which translates as “Carnival of Light”, also caught attention in Portugal because Carnaval de Luz can be read in Portuguese, as well as Spanish.

As reported by SIC Notícias, Bono had already revealed the name during an interview with The Irish Times before the band officially confirmed the album.

Carnaval de Luz will be U2’s 16th studio album and includes 12 new songs. The first single, Silencio, was released alongside the announcement, while another song from the album, Street of Dreams, came out in July.

One of the tracks also brings together Bono and American country singer Dolly Parton. Called Torn, the song was written by U2, Parton and Johnny McDaid from Snow Patrol.

The album includes several other collaborations. Brian Eno contributed to a number of songs, while Dutch DJ Martin Garrix is among the writers of Glorify. Ryan Tedder also worked on Silencio.

The album was produced by Jacknife Lee, who has worked with U2 on several previous projects.

U2 began in Dublin in September 1976 after drummer Larry Mullen Jr., then a teenager, put a notice on a board at Mount Temple Comprehensive School looking for musicians to start a band.

Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. went on to become one of the world’s best-known rock bands and, 50 years later, the four members remain together.

Carnaval de Luz follows two EPs released earlier in 2026, Days of Ash and Easter Lily. Together with the new album, U2 will have released 24 new songs during their anniversary year.

Carnaval de Luz will be released worldwide on 13 November.
