Once reduced to just five surviving birds in 1980, the species has recovered to approximately 350 birds. Native to the Chatham Islands, the black robin received more than 26,000 votes in the annual competition, which promotes awareness of native wildlife and conservation challenges.
A record 105,000 people participated in this year’s Bird of the Year competition, organised by conservation group Forest & Bird.
The black robin defeated the kākāpō and kārearea falcon, which finished second and third, respectively.
Campaigners are now seeking to establish a third habitat to support further population growth. First launched as an email poll in 2005, the competition has become a major annual event.
