An AI engineer recently decoded an 1809 letter ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte in just six hours, solving a puzzle that had remained unanswered for over 200 years. The technology is transforming historical research by making previously inaccessible sources available without specialist knowledge.

In Paris, researchers are using artificial intelligence to transcribe 14,600 Latin pages from Notre Dame Cathedral’s medieval archives. The system achieves character recognition rates between 88 and 94 percent, revealing information about daily life, construction and abandoned children.

Researchers estimate that manual transcription would take decades, while automated processing enables historical investigations that were previously impossible to undertake.
