Previously incinerated with general waste, the diapers will now be processed at Denmark’s first dedicated treatment facility. City authorities estimate that between 85 and 94 percent of diaper waste can be converted into new materials, reducing the need for incineration.

The collected diapers will be processed into materials including biofiber for biogas, electricity and district heating, while plastics can be reused in car interiors.

Collection will expand to nursing homes, senior housing and other municipal institutions in February 2027. Detached households and allotment associations can also participate next year, with full implementation of the scheme expected by 2029.
