In Germany, energy company Enpal recorded a 30 percent increase in solar panel enquiries following the outbreak of the Iran conflict. Companies are developing solar paving systems that allow households to generate electricity beyond traditional rooftop installations.

Solar paving company PLATIO installed a 6.64 kWp system in a residential courtyard near Frankfurt in 2021, capable of covering a typical three-bedroom home’s annual electricity needs at maximum generation.

Its panels use toughened, anti-slip glass suitable for walking and parking. However, horizontal installations generally produce less electricity than rooftop panels because of reduced direct sunlight and accumulated dirt.
