President of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA) has had some truly good news.
“We met with Dr Pedro, Amigo’s vet at Cadela Carlota. It looks like he will be ready to be homed soon!” He’s had a lot of help from Ani, Gail, and Pedro, along with the volunteers, to get him firmly on the road to rehabilitation. “Amigo will need a special home that’s for sure. Built on love and trust!”
In the meantime, “Ruby” is in her final rehab stages for heartworm treatment, with fosterers Liz and Pete. “She’s due for some serious dental work. Looks like her jaw was kicked a few times.” APAA have so many people to thank for their donations to help both these rescue dogs. Winners because of kindness. “Our straying “Boy” from Odelouca has turned up outside Mira Rio. His usual port-of-call has not been here to feed him, so he’s moved 4km down the road. But Marie, our lookout, carries food around with her, just in case!”
APAA hope he will be another success story but has to catch him first! “It’s a routine: feeding, talking, building trust. It takes time… and our wonderful volunteers!” Unfortunately, cats are never far from APAA’s busy agenda. “We’re dealing with a lot of private smaller cat colonies, as well as the larger ones.”
Jenny’s white van is not always just for Pop-Up stuff, but for transferring working traps to sites for cat-catching and ferrying animals to and from the vets. “SNiP is our main tool against the increase in cat colonies, whether feral or not!” Spaying & Neutering Programme, costs, but nearly all the money raised from their events is earmarked for this worthy cause. “Not only for our own SNIP’ing but other shelters and small charities too…”
Some community members, luckily, spot the problem when a mother arrives with her kittens. “Multiplying is natural to them!” Literally nipping it in the bud. Before it gets out of hand. Good! “We are lucky to have about 180 full-time members, but also around 400 ‘event’ followers.”
Whether a member, a follower, or a ‘shopper’, your spending, donations, and interest in APAA help us help you. If you have time to spare, even better!
