Saying “everyone” is moving to Portugal might be a stretch, but the numbers don’t lie — over 21,000 Americans have made the move in recent years, whether for the long haul or just temporarily. They now make up the largest group of newcomers, with the Chinese not far behind. In fact, about 15% of Portugal’s 10.6 million residents are originally from outside the country.
The numbers help highlight why Portugal is so appealing. According to the Global Peace Index — a yearly report by the Australia-based Institute for Economics & Peace — Portugal ranks as the 7th safest country in the world, just behind Singapore.
There’s also the slower pace of life and a better work-life balance that many find appealing. English is widely spoken, partly due to the centuries-old connection with Britain, especially through the port wine trade that began in the 16th century. On top of that, a 2024 survey found that the cost of living in Portugal is about 36% lower than in the U.S.
“The weather, the food — but mostly the safety” are the reasons why most people are moving to Portugal. Once again, safety comes up as a big reason why so many expats are choosing this country. Maybe what they’re really looking for is some peace and quiet. And what they like least? “The low salaries.” Which, of course, ties into why the cost of living is 36% lower than in the U.S.
Portugal also offers plenty to see and do. For visitors, there are 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites — more per square mile than in the UK or France. One of them is the historic centre of Guimarães, a charming town just north of Porto. Taking a walk there is truly a feast for the eyes.
That’s another appeal of Portugal — especially in the north — it hasn’t been overrun by tourists the way much of Europe has in recent years.
