"The mayor of Lisbon instructed municipal companies to immediately suspend operations of the city's elevators—Bica and Lavra—and the Graça Funicular, and to conduct technical inspections of this equipment," the source said in a statement sent to Lusa.
Carlos Moedas' decision follows the derailment of the Glória funicular, which has killed 17 people.
The Glória elevator, operated by Carris, connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, a route of approximately 265 meters, and is highly popular with tourists.
All designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsar, the Lavra, Glória, and Bica elevators are also operated by Carris, as is the Graça Funicular.
The Lavra elevator connects Rua Câmara Pestana and Largo da Anunciada (perpendicular to Avenida da Liberdade), while the Bica elevator connects Rua de São Paulo to Largo do Calhariz, and the Graça Funicular connects Martim Moniz and Largo da Graça.
The government has declared a day of national mourning today, and Lisbon City Council has declared three days of municipal mourning.
