Named the ‘Dudgeon walking shark’ after Australian scientist Christine Dudgeon, it is only found in a small area of the country’s southeast, raising concerns about its vulnerability. Researchers said evidence from related species suggests conservation efforts can successfully protect these rare animals.

The newly identified shark is the tenth known walking shark species. Dr Dudgeon and her team plan to return to Papua New Guinea in October to gather more information needed to support the sharks long-term conservation. Researchers say its limited range makes it vulnerable to habitat loss and fishing activity.
