In a statement released at the end of that meeting, the EU Council says that ministers exchanged “views on the importance of protecting the bloc’s external borders.”

“There was consensus on the need to continue the relentless fight against networks aiding illegal immigration, strengthen return mechanisms, reinforce EU borders, develop solid partnerships with third countries and improve anticipation capabilities,” the statement reads.
