The test analyses fragments of cell-free DNA circulating in the bloodstream and identified both early- and late-stage cancers. Researchers found accuracy improved further when the assay was combined with existing blood tests and simple clinical risk factors, including age and sex.

The study analysed blood samples from 377 people in Guatemala and Romania, where liver cancer has different underlying causes. Researchers say the technology could improve early detection and eventually support blood tests capable of identifying multiple diseases using a common platform. Future studies will focus on broader clinical validation before widespread use.
