When asked by Lusa about the kindergarten in the civil parish of Vilar de Mouros, a source from the Caminha Municipality (in the Viana do Castelo district) stated that all schools in the municipality would remain open for the 2026/2027 school year and that all classes had been approved with their proposed student numbers.

Two mothers with children at the Torre school in Vilar de Mouros also told Lusa they had been informed that the kindergarten would open for the next school year, after previously receiving indications that the facility might not reopen due to a lack of students.

In early July, parents from Vilar de Mouros were seeking three children to enrol to prevent the closure of the parish school’s kindergarten, highlighting, in statements to Lusa, that the school offered cafeteria services and free school transportation.

On 15 July, the Caminha Municipality’s councillor for education stated that the school cluster was considering closing the kindergarten.

On 6 July, Filipa Fernandes, a mother of two students, said that at the end-of-year party, there were 18 children (across both kindergarten and primary levels) at the school, which serves a parish with a population of approximately 730 people.

At the time, Filipa Fernandes noted that five children would remain at the primary school for the upcoming year. At the same time, seven were enrolled in the kindergarten—whereas 10 is the minimum number of children required to open a class,” according to the school’s guidelines.
