While promoting their debut album, the two-member group, made up of Phoebe Lunny and Selin Macieira-Boşgelmez, displayed the message ‘F**k Chega' on the stage screen and urged the audience to repeat the slogan in Portuguese. The group from Brighton also used the occasion to display slogans against the far-right and in support of international causes, showing the Palestinian flag and calling for the liberation of territories such as the Congo and Sudan.

The British group’s actions led André Ventura, leader of Chega, to respond on the social media platform X, where he criticised the allocation of public funds for an event that involved insults aimed at the party’s members and supporters. He asked whether public funding for the festival should be used to give a platform to such behaviour.

Likewise, Liliana Silva, Mayor of Caminha (elected as a member of the PSD), publicly denounced the band’s conduct in a post on Facebook. She called it regrettable to have used the stage of the historic Minho festival for insults. She stressed that the municipal initiative is not affiliated with any political party and must be based on respect and freedom.

Speaking to Jornal de Notícias before the concert, the members of the musical project explained their political stance in terms of the essence of the punk-rock genre and the international situation. Lead singer Phoebe Lunny said artists have a duty to reflect the social environment around them and respond to the rise of fascism globally. Bassist Selin Macieira-Boşgelmez, who is of Portuguese descent, noted that the band’s identity is shaped by engaging with an increasingly extreme political climate.
