Getting there is also part of the experience, as Tavira Island can only be reached by boat. We took the ferry from Cais das Quatro Águas, which brings you directly to the island and just a short walk from the beach.

I had imagined Tavira Island would be quieter than some of the Algarve’s other beaches, but that was definitely not the case. It was very busy, although visiting on a Sunday in August probably had something to do with it.

The good thing is that the sandy beach seems to continue forever. Once you walk away from the main entrance and facilities, you can easily find much more space. To the west is Praia da Terra Estreita, which can also be reached by boat from Santa Luzia. Continue further and you eventually reach Praia do Barril, known for its former tuna-fishing settlement and the famous Anchor Cemetery. Barril can also be accessed from Pedras d’El Rei, either on foot or by taking the little tourist train.

The Atlantic was also surprisingly warm during our visit, so we spent most of the afternoon swimming and relaxing.

After enjoying the beach, we stopped for a lovely Sunday lunch and had grilled fish at one of the island’s restaurants — a perfect end to the day.

Best for: A full day by the sea, long beach walks, families and combining a beach trip with lunch at one of the island’s restaurants.
