More than 30 hospitals are participating in the initiative for patients undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses.

Around 100 patients joined a virtual trip to Osaka’s Tennoji Zoo, designed to ease feelings of isolation, encourage interaction and give children experiences to look forward to during treatment.

At Okayama University Hospital, 15 children aged four to 16 used VR headsets to explore a virtual recreation of Tennoji Zoo.

They could see animals, hear explanations from zookeepers and communicate with other participants through messages and reactions.

Organisers plan to add more virtual destinations, allowing young patients to experience places they cannot physically visit while remaining in hospital.
