Staying at the 5–star Wine House Hotel in Douro Valley

Set among the vineyards of the Douro Valley, one of my favourite parts of Portugal, it is a place where everything seems to revolve around wine – from what you drink and eat to where you sleep and even the treatments at the spa.

And even getting there is part of the experience.

Arriving along one of the world’s most scenic roads

The Wine House Hotel – Quinta da Pacheca is located close to Peso da Régua, and even the journey there is an experience of its own.

We arrived from Pinhão along the N222, a stretch of road that has gained international recognition for being one of the world’s most scenic drives. And not just one of the most beautiful roads in Portugal – we’re talking about the world.

Having driven it myself, I can understand why.

The road follows the Douro, twisting between the river and steep hills covered in vineyards. There are beautiful views almost constantly, and plenty of moments when you just want to stop the car and take another photo.

Now imagine driving through all of this towards your hotel and, at the end of it, arriving at Quinta da Pacheca – a vineyard estate that almost looks like something from a fairytale.

It was quite an introduction to our stay.

Straight into holiday mode

The experience starts almost immediately.

After arriving at the reception, everything was taken care of. Our luggage was taken to our room, and our car was parked for us.

No searching for parking, no carrying suitcases around. We were free to forget about all the boring practical things and started enjoying the hotel.

And what better way to start than with a glass of Quinta da Pacheca wine?

At reception, we were asked whether we would like one and, considering where we had just arrived, saying no didn’t really seem like an option.

From there, there was only one place I wanted to go – the pool.

A pool surrounded by grapes

This isn’t just an ordinary hotel pool.

There are vineyards all around you, and during our stay the grapes were hanging from the vines just metres away. It felt peaceful and luxurious without losing that connection with the place itself.

We stayed in one of the hotel’s regular rooms, which was spacious and very comfortable, but I have to admit that we were extremely curious about the accommodation Quinta da Pacheca is probably most famous for.

The Wine Barrels.

These enormous barrel-shaped suites sit among the vineyards and look like something from a fairy tale. Some also have their own private pools, making them even more tempting.

We couldn’t resist walking around to have a closer look.

They have actually become one of the symbols of Quinta da Pacheca and were recognised in the Architecture and Landscape category of the Best of Wine Tourism Awards in 2020.

After our little exploration, we wandered back through the vineyards towards the pool – and yes, when you are walking past all those grapes, it is very difficult not to try one or two.

We spent the rest of the afternoon with cocktails and snacks by the pool before heading back to our room to get ready for dinner.

Dinner with a wine pairing

Dinner was at The Wine House Restaurant, led by Chef Carlos Pires.

Here, Portuguese flavours and ingredients from the region are presented in a more creative and refined way, with wine playing just as important a role as the food.

We opted for the wine pairing, and I’m glad we did.

Rather than simply ordering a bottle for the table, different wines accompanied the dishes, giving us a chance to discover more of Quinta da Pacheca’s collection while enjoying dinner.

So, we decided to book a wine tasting for the following day.

A Michelin Key stay

Throughout our stay, you could understand why The Wine House Hotel – Quinta da Pacheca has received a MICHELIN Key.

The distinction places the hotel within the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection in Portugal and recognises the experience as a whole – not simply the room you sleep in.

And that makes sense here because staying at Quinta da Pacheca is very much about the entire place.

You have the vineyards, the wine, the restaurant, the unusual Wine Barrels, the pool and the spa, all connected by the same idea.

Starting the day slowly

The following morning began with a phenomenal breakfast before we headed to the Vineyard Spa.

And even here, wine follows you.

The spa takes its inspiration from the vineyards, with treatments using grape seeds and products of natural origin. There is also a hydrotherapy circuit and relaxation areas, but for me the best part was simply being able to slow down.

After travelling around the Douro, spending time by the pool and enjoying a long dinner the night before, a quiet morning at the spa was exactly what we needed.

Finally, the wine tasting

Wine tourism is a huge part of Quinta da Pacheca, with different experiences available for visitors who want to discover more about the estate and the wines produced here.

And you certainly don’t need to be a wine expert to enjoy it- we could ask questions and learn more about the wines and the Douro.

I normally prefer red wine, so one of the biggest surprises for me was how much I enjoyed the Port.

Port wine isn’t usually what I would choose first, but tasting it here was completely different. Perhaps it was because we had learnt more about it, perhaps it was the setting, or perhaps I had simply never given it enough of a chance before.

Suddenly, what was inside the glass had a story behind it, and I love this experience!

Living the Douro

There is actually much more to discover here than we managed to fit into our stay.

Quinta da Pacheca offers different wine experiences and workshops, and there is even an Atelier d’Or, where resident artist Óscar Rodrigues creates his Winearellas – artworks made using wine.

It shows just how far the estate has taken the idea of wine tourism. You can drink the wine, learn about it, sleep in a giant wine barrel, enjoy vineyard-inspired spa treatments and even use wine to create art.

The Wine House Hotel – Quinta da Pacheca may be a five-star hotel, but it doesn’t feel disconnected from where it is. Quite the opposite.

Everything keeps bringing you back to the vineyards.
