Patrícia Gomes, meteorologist at the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), says maximum temperatures are forecast to stay above seasonal averages at least until the weekend.

The warmest conditions are expected in southern Portugal, while the north and centre will be slightly cooler, although temperatures across much of the country could reach 20°C or higher.

Patrícia Gomes added that maximum temperatures were expected to rise slightly before remaining relatively stable until Saturday, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could be 2°C to 5°C above the usual in late October.

These unseasonably mild conditions are likely to persist into Sunday and Monday, although temperatures are then expected to begin falling gradually.

However, Gomes cautioned that uncertainty remains about when and how much the anticipated drop will occur as next week begins.

Dry weather

Rain is not forecast across Portugal until at least Sunday or Monday, with mostly clear or lightly clouded skies expected over the coming days.

Winds are also expected to remain generally light, predominantly from the east, while temperatures should fluctuate only slightly in the short term.

Thursday's forecast shows regional contrasts across the country, as minimum temperatures are expected to range from 7°C in Bragança to 15°C in Faro and Portalegre, while maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 28°C in Santarém.

Meanwhile, Guarda and Aveiro are expected to reach highs of around 20°C, reflecting cooler conditions in parts of the north and centre.

Residents and visitors can expect relatively warm afternoons and largely dry conditions for the remainder of the week, although cooler mornings and evenings remain possible.

As temperatures run several degrees above the seasonal norm, the spell of sunshine is set to extend weather reminiscent of summer well into autumn.

These temperatures are expected to ease gradually next week, but the precise outlook remains subject to change as updated forecasts become available.
