Forest clearance declined by 41.8% over the past year, reaching 3,335 square kilometres. Since 2022, deforestation has decreased by 71.2%, largely due to stronger environmental enforcement and increased investment in protection agencies under President Lula da Silva.

The latest figures come from Brazil’s Prodes satellite monitoring system, operated by the National Institute for Space Research. Pará, Mato Grosso and Amazonas accounted for most remaining Amazon deforestation, although clearance declined by more than 45% in each state.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring Cerrado savannah recorded its lowest annual deforestation since 2001, with forest clearance falling by 48.4% over four years.
