His third-place finish 1 November race, 4.006 seconds behind the winner, was enough for Antonelli to become the youngest world champion ever at 20 and the first Italian to achieve the feat since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

British driver Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) finished second, 0.799 seconds behind Verstappen, with British driver George Russell (Mercedes) coming sixth. They were the only two drivers who could still prevent Antonelli from securing the title in his second year in the sport.

Formula 1 in Portugal

The Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix will return to Portugal on 20 June, as the ninth race of the 2027 World Championship, according to the announced calendar.

The Portuguese race weekend will take place from 18 to 20 June, between the Monaco Grand Prix on 6 June and the British Grand Prix on 4 July, with no sprint race scheduled.

The calendar announced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and championship promoter Formula 1, and approved by the World Motor Sport Council, includes 24 Grands Prix and 10 sprint races, four more than in 2026. The season will begin in Bahrain on 14 March and conclude in Abu Dhabi on 12 December.

Formula 1 had already announced Portugal's return to the World Championship in 2027 and 2028, under an agreement with the Portuguese Government, Turismo de Portugal and promoter Parkalgar.
