Founded by pastor-turned-farmer Mambud Samai, the Farming on Crutches initiative trains people with limb loss to grow food, start small farms and regain independence. More than 100 people have completed the programme, which aims to expand across West Africa.

The programme was created in response to Sierra Leone’s civil war, which left an estimated 30,000 people with amputations. Participants return to their communities with farming skills, while some have launched community farms, raised livestock and kept bees. The initiative recently welcomed its 100th participant and plans to introduce training in beekeeping, food processing and packaging.
