The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) states that the biggest changes are expected at the beginning of the week, particularly across the north and centre of the country, where showers and lower temperatures will bring a welcome break from the recent heat. Coastal areas are also likely to wake up to cloudy skies, mist and drizzle in some places, while fresh north-westerly winds will help keep temperatures down.

Further south, conditions will remain warmer, although temperatures are also expected to ease slightly compared with recent days. The Algarve should continue to enjoy plenty of sunshine, with only a small chance of unsettled weather.

Gradual increase in temperatures

As the week goes on, the cooler spell is expected to be short-lived. Forecasts suggest temperatures will gradually climb again from midweek, with hot weather returning to many parts of the country by the weekend. Inland areas of the Alentejo and southern Portugal are expected to see the highest temperatures, with some places likely to approach 40C once again if current forecasts remain on track.

The changing conditions are being driven by a temporary shift in weather patterns across the Iberian Peninsula. While Atlantic air will briefly bring cooler and more unsettled conditions, warmer air is expected to return later in the week, restoring typical summer weather across much of Portugal.
