The fire started on the afternoon of 10 September at the famous café in Rossio, with the alarm raised shortly after 3pm.

Around 30 firefighters and 10 vehicles from the Lisbon Fire Brigade were called to the scene, according to RTP.

The fire was later extinguished, although firefighters remained at the café to ventilate the building.

Three people were injured and taken to Hospital de São José.

As a result of the incident, a nearby building of Banco de Portugal was evacuated, the canteen of the bank being situated in that building. The fire had no effect on the building itself.

The fire is reported to have started on the lower floor of the café, but has already been extinguished, as reported by Rádio Renascença.

Located in Rossio, Café Nicola is one of Lisbon's best-known historic cafés and has been part of the city for generations.

The current café opened in 1929, although the history of Nicola in Rossio goes back much further.

The café is particularly known for its connection to Portuguese poet Bocage and for being a meeting place for writers, artists and other well-known figures over the years.

The extent of the damage caused by the fire has not yet been confirmed.
