As a summer of community programmes draws to a close, the Sovereign Art Foundation turns towards the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize, with 30 finalists soon to be revealed and an ambitious programme of exhibitions and events ahead.

September marks a change of pace for the Sovereign Art Foundation in Portugal.

Over the summer, much of the focus has been on taking creativity into communities. Free artist-led workshops have brought children and families together in Lisbon and Estremoz, while September sees the programme extend into the Algarve for the first time with a nature-inspired family workshop in Loulé.

The community programme continues, with another free workshop planned in Lisbon this month and two more to follow in October. Behind the scenes, however, another major part of the Foundation's year has also been taking shape.

Judging for the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize is now complete.

From hundreds of nominations and submissions, 30 works have been selected for this year's finalist exhibition. The names of the artists will be revealed very shortly, beginning the next chapter of a Prize that has become a central part of the Foundation's work in Portugal.

Supporting artists, supporting communities

The Sovereign Art Foundation was established in Hong Kong in 2003 around a model that remains at the heart of its work today: supporting contemporary artists while using art to support children and communities.

Its art prizes have since expanded internationally, creating platforms through which artists can gain visibility, reach collectors and audiences, and have their work considered by respected figures from the international art world.

The Portuguese edition launched in 2022 and is open to Portuguese artists, as well as artists of any nationality who reside in Portugal. Artists are nominated by independent arts professionals, with submitted works progressing through a rigorous judging process to determine the final shortlist.

The Prize is judged by an independent panel of leading figures from the international art world, bringing perspectives from across museums, galleries, curatorial practice and contemporary art.

This year's judging is now complete, with the final selection bringing together 30 outstanding artists and works representing some of the most exciting contemporary talent working in Portugal today.

Rather than representing a single style, medium or idea of what contemporary art in Portugal should look like, the shortlist reflects the breadth of artistic practices found across the country. Painting sits alongside sculpture, photography, installation and other contemporary approaches, creating a snapshot of the ideas and conversations shaping art in Portugal today.

More than one way to win

Once the finalists are announced, the competition is far from over.

Three awards recognise the artists from different perspectives.

The Grand Prize is selected by the judging panel, while the Public Vote Prize places the decision in the hands of visitors and audiences, inviting them to choose the artwork that resonates most strongly with them.

The Prize also includes a dedicated Women's Prize, creating an additional platform to recognise and celebrate exceptional female contemporary artists working in Portugal.

Together, the awards acknowledge something inherently subjective about art. The work that captures the attention of an international judging panel may not be the same work that becomes the public favourite, and that difference is part of the conversation the Prize is designed to encourage.

For all 30 finalists, selection means becoming part of a major exhibition and wider programme designed to introduce their work to collectors, curators, fellow artists and new audiences in Portugal and internationally.

Thirty artworks, many conversations

This year's finalists will come together at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes (SNBA) in Lisbon, where the 2026 exhibition will open on 24 November and run until 12 December.

The historic setting will bring all 30 shortlisted works together, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the breadth of this year's selection in person and cast their vote for the Public Vote Prize.

The exhibition will also be accompanied by an exciting programme of events centred around the Prize and its finalist artworks, creating further opportunities for audiences, artists, collectors and supporters to come together throughout the exhibition period.

Further details will be announced over the coming months.

A full circle

The Professional Prize provides a platform for artists. Some of those artists subsequently become part of the Foundation's wider community, participating in talks, workshops and collaborations that bring their practices to new audiences.

At the same time, proceeds generated through the Foundation's art prizes and fundraising activities help support its charitable work, including Make It Better Portugal, which provides expressive arts therapy for children and young people. Alongside this, its free community workshop programme creates opportunities for children and families to experience creativity together without cost being a barrier.

Supporting professional artists and widening access to creativity are therefore closely connected parts of the Foundation's mission. Art supports art, and the relationships created through the Prize often extend far beyond the exhibition itself.

Looking ahead

The finalist announcement will begin the countdown towards November's exhibition at SNBA and a new season of events bringing artists, audiences and supporters together around contemporary art.
