Open to fluent speakers and beginners alike, the initiative aims to foster conversation and social connection. It has been expanded nationwide after being introduced by Gaeilge365 and Dublin’s four local authorities.

The initiative supports the Government’s Action Plan for Irish Language Public Services 2026–2028 and the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language. Ministers said the benches encourage everyday use of Irish while helping tackle isolation by creating welcoming places where people can meet, chat and build community connections in parks across the country.
